Privacy

The short version: this site asks for nothing about you and sets no advertising cookies. It does measure traffic with Google Analytics, which sets its own cookies — what that collects is set out below, and blocking it costs you nothing.

Affiliate links

Booking links go through a redirect on this domain of the form /go/… before they reach the merchant. When you follow one we record the time, which link it was, the page that referred you, a country code, and one-way hashes of your IP address and browser user agent. The hashes are salted and are kept so we can count clicks and spot abuse; they are not reversible and are not used to build a profile of you.

Once you land on the merchant’s site their own privacy policy and cookies apply, including the cookie that credits us with the referral. See the affiliate disclosure.

Analytics

Pages are measured with Google Analytics 4, added through the Site Kit by Google plugin. It records which pages are viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, which site or search sent you, and what kind of device and browser you used. We look at that in aggregate to see which guides are worth writing more of. We never try to identify an individual reader from it, and we do not run advertising or remarketing tags.

To do that it sets first-party cookies in your browser, named _ga and _ga_<id>. They hold a random identifier so a repeat visit counts as the same browser rather than a new one; they hold nothing you have typed. Google receives your IP address as part of the request but discards it rather than logging it, and the event-level data is deleted at the end of the property’s retention window, which is at most 14 months.

You can opt out. Any tracker-blocking extension or a browser that blocks third-party scripts stops it, as does Google’s own opt-out add-on. Nothing on this site changes if you do. Google’s handling of the data is described in its privacy policy.

This site is also verified in Google Search Console, which reports the search queries our pages appear for. That is measured by Google at search time and involves no cookie or script on this site.

Server logs and fonts

The web server keeps ordinary access logs for a short period. Typefaces are served by Google Fonts, so loading a page fetches those font files from Google.
