Montego Bay
Montego Bay in hurricane season, a year after Melissa
October is the cheapest month for a Montego Bay hotel, a median of $369 a night against $575 in March. Storm risk is the reason, so book from late November, once the season has closed.
Toby’s Resort was $93 a night and rated 8.6 when we checked, on Kent Avenue where the Hip Strip starts, a short walk from Dead End Beach.
Eat jerk pork at the Pork Pit on Gloucester Avenue, across from Walter Fletcher Beach, and ride a route taxi downtown with small Jamaican notes in your pocket.
Hurricane Melissa shut a dozen of the big hotels here in October 2025. The core visitor areas are open again, but some resorts are still coming back in phases, so get your hotel’s status in writing before you pay.

When to go and what it costs
Montego Bay hotel prices are cheapest in October, a median of $369 a night, and dearest in March at $575. October is also the month Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica last year. The median is noisy because all-inclusive resorts drift in and out of the sample, and November’s room-only quartile was the lowest of the year.
Late November to mid-December is the pick. The season closes on the 30th and the second wet spell tails off, with days around 29C to 30C (84F to 86F) and the room-only quartile at its lowest of the year in November.
April works too. It’s dry and busy with Easter, and the median is well down on March.
October has the cheapest median of all, and it’s the month Melissa arrived in 2025, so if you go then, insure the whole trip and book a hotel that has already reopened.
March costs most. August to October is the heart of the storm season.
| Month | Avg nightly hotel |
|---|---|
| January | $484 $13 above the annual average |
| Peak Dry, with highs near 29C (84F). Resort season sets the median, and the room-only quartile sits at about a third of it. | |
| February | $441 $30 below the annual average |
| Peak The dry middle of winter, around 29C (84F). Resorts stay full, though the median comes off January. | |
| March | $575 $104 above the annual average |
| Peak Dearest month of the year. US spring break lands on top of winter, dry and 30C (86F). | |
| April | $469 $2 below the annual average |
| Best value Still dry and warming to 30C (86F). Easter keeps it busy, then prices start to ease off March. | |
| May | $557 $86 above the annual average |
| The first wet spell starts and the hills turn green, 31C (88F). A high median over a low quartile, so book room-only. | |
| June | $490 $19 above the annual average |
| Storm season opens on the 1st. Wet early on, 31C (88F), and quiet on the Hip Strip. | |
| July | $567 $96 above the annual average |
| Summer holidays push the median back up, 32C (90F). Beryl passed the south coast in July 2024 without landfall. | |
| August | $395 $76 below the annual average |
| The cheapest summer median, 32C (90F). Independence Day is the 6th, and the busiest storm stretch begins. | |
| September | $428 $43 below the annual average |
| Deep in storm season, 31C (88F), and the second wet spell sets in. Sampled twelve months out, so read it loosely. | |
| October | $369 $102 below the annual average |
| Cheapest month, 31C (88F), still in the storm window. Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland in October 2025. | |
| November | $460 $11 below the annual average |
| Best value Rain eases and the season ends on the 30th, 30C (86F). The median is noisy, the room-only quartile is the year's lowest. | |
| December | $413 $58 below the annual average |
| Best value Dry again at 29C (84F). Soft until mid-month, then Christmas and New Year fill the resorts. | |

How long do you have?
Five to seven days suits Montego Bay. Three covers the Hip Strip, downtown and the free beaches. Five adds the Rastafari ATV morning and the hummingbirds at Rocklands. A week reaches Falmouth and the Martha Brae, with one long day east to the waterfalls or west to Negril.
3 days · The Hip Strip and downtown
- Day 1 the taxi in and sunset at Dead End Beach.
- Day 2 Sam Sharpe Square, the Cultural Centre and jerk at the Pork Pit.
- Day 3 Doctor’s Cave in the morning, Harmony Beach Park before the flight.
5 days · Town, the hills and the river
- Days 1-2 the Hip Strip, the beaches and downtown.
- Day 3 the Rastafari ATV morning, then Doctor’s Cave.
- Day 4 Rocklands for the hummingbirds and the Great River raft.
- Day 5 Harmony Beach Park, then the airport.
7 days · East to Falmouth and the falls
- Days 1-4 as the five-day plan.
- Day 5 Falmouth’s Georgian grid and the Martha Brae.
- Day 6 the three waterfalls near Ocho Rios, or Negril by coach.
- Day 7 Harmony Beach Park and the flight.
Suggested itinerary
A week in Montego Bay starts with sunset at Dead End Beach and a day downtown at Sam Sharpe Square. Then the Rastafari ATV trip and Doctor’s Cave, Rocklands with a Great River raft, Falmouth and the Martha Brae, the waterfalls or Negril, and a last swim at Harmony Beach Park.
Day 1 · Land and find Dead End Beach
Licensed taxis carry red PPV plates and wait in front of arrivals. Expect roughly US$15 to US$30 to the Hip Strip and agree it before you get in, because nobody runs a meter.
Drop your bags and walk down Kent Avenue to Dead End Beach, which is free and mostly local. Planes come in low enough to read the airline names, and the water stays shallow a long way out. We couldn’t confirm how it came through Melissa, so ask at your hotel first. Stay for sunset, when vendors sell coconuts and beer.
Day 2 · Downtown and Sam Sharpe Square
Take a route taxi into town from the Hip Strip. Short hops run J$100 to J$200, paid at the end in small Jamaican notes.
Sam Sharpe Square is free. Sharpe, the Baptist deacon who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, was hanged here, and the stone Cage in the corner held enslaved people caught in town after curfew.
The Cultural Centre on the southwest corner is in the old courthouse where he was tried, open Tuesday to Sunday. Its last published fee, US$8, is years old, so bring more. Browse the Harbour Street craft market on the way back, then eat jerk pork at the Pork Pit, across from Walter Fletcher Beach.
Day 3 · The ATV morning and Doctor's Cave
The Rastafari ATV trip picks up in the morning and takes three hours for $165. It’s the best-scored thing sold in Montego Bay.
Spend the afternoon at Doctor’s Cave Beach on Gloucester Avenue, about US$5 for adults by one undated listing. Walter Fletcher and Cornwall are the other paid beaches along the strip if Doctor’s Cave is full. Dinner on the strip, or a taxi up to Belfield 1794, which serves dinner in an old sugar mill, Monday to Saturday.
Day 4 · Rocklands and the Great River
Rocklands Bird Sanctuary is up Long Hill from Reading, near Anchovy, and the last stretch of road is rough, so take a taxi. The official site had it open daily 10am to 5pm with adults from US$30, cash only on site. You hold a feeder and hummingbirds land on your finger.
The trails were still closed after Melissa. In the afternoon take the Great River raft, two hours for $50 west of town, and eat early back on the strip.
Day 5 · East to Falmouth
Falmouth is 29km east along the coast, founded in 1769 and laid out on a Georgian grid. Start on Water Square, where the courthouse was rebuilt to its old look after a fire. St Peter’s Anglican is the oldest church in town, and walking the streets costs nothing.
The Martha Brae raft launches just inland and costs $108. The Luminous Lagoon is here too. Expedia’s $79 night tour leaves from Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay, so staying at Oyster Bay or Coral Spring makes the night trip much easier.
Day 6 · The waterfalls or Negril
The full falls day is $126 for Blue Hole, Secret Falls and Dunn’s River, six hours with the drive east. Take shoes that grip on wet rock. The Cool Runnings catamaran reaches Dunn’s River by sea for $130 with lunch and a bar.
West instead, the Knutsford Express coach runs to Negril in about two hours, fares unverified. Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland, so check recent reports for Negril before you go.
Day 7 · Harmony Beach Park and the flight
Harmony Beach Park is on Howard Cooke Boulevard, about seven minutes from the airport, which makes it the place for a last swim. It’s free, with showers and lifeguards on duty, and the UDC reopened it after Melissa on 8am to 6pm hours. Check the beach days before you plan around them.
Fyah Side Jerk and Suzie’s Beach Grill sit by the sand for lunch. Leave plenty of time at Sangster, since high-season queues are why the airport lounge sells so well.
Where to stay
The Hip Strip in Montego Bay has the cheapest rooms and the walk to Doctor’s Cave, from Toby’s Resort at $93. Ironshore and Rose Hall hold the big beach resorts, Round Hill sits west of town, and Falmouth has Oyster Bay. Some hotels sold as Montego Bay are near Ocho Rios.

Hip Strip, 7 min walk to Dead End Beach
Toby's Resort
$93 a night, budget
The cheapest room in this search, at the top of the Hip Strip on Kent Avenue. Doctor’s Cave and Dead End Beach are both about ten minutes on foot, and the airport’s a short drive. 1,410 reviews settle on 8.6. There’s a pool, but no sand of its own.

Great River Bay, west of Montego Bay
Waters Edge Guest House
$128 a night, budget
A small guest house on the sea wall at Great River Bay, west of town, with kayaks to borrow and breakfast in the rate. 224 guests rate it 8.6. You swim off the wall rather than a beach, and you’ll want a taxi or a car for most things. Rocklands is close.

Ramparts Close, over the city
Hotel Grand A View
$150 a night, budget
A boutique hotel on Ramparts Close with views over the city and the bay, rated 8.8 by 1,006 guests. It’s up the hill, off the sand, so lean on the free shuttle it runs to the beach and the airport. Ask for the shuttle times when you book.

Coral Spring, Trelawny, near Falmouth
Ocean Coral Spring – All Inclusive
$362 a night for two, all-inclusive
The cheapest all-inclusive in this search, on a long beach at Coral Spring in Trelawny, between Falmouth and Duncans. It’s about an hour’s drive from the airport, which is the catch. 4,275 reviews give it 8.4. Falmouth and the Martha Brae are close, the Hip Strip isn’t.

Mahoe Bay, Ironshore
Hotel Riu Montego Bay – Adults Only – All Inclusive
$435 a night for two, all-inclusive
Adults only, on the beach at Mahoe Bay, a short drive from the airport. With 5,537 reviews at 8.6 it’s the most reviewed hotel in this search, and it was open again when we checked. Expect a big resort with a busy pool.

Hip Strip, beside Doctor's Cave Beach
S Hotel Montego Bay – Luxury Boutique All Inclusive Hotel
$516 a night for two, all-inclusive
Right beside Doctor’s Cave Beach on the Hip Strip, so the Pork Pit and the bars are a walk away if you tire of the included food. 2,140 guests rate it 9.4. It’s a boutique place, much smaller than the Rose Hall resorts, and the strip outside stays loud late.

Rose Hall, on the beach
Half Moon
$587 a night, room only
The big old Rose Hall estate, rated 9.4 by 699 guests. Melissa shut it, and it came back in stages, the Eclipse rooms this April and Founders Cove in July. Room only, so every meal is extra. Ask which part of the estate you’re booked into.

Oyster Bay, Falmouth
Excellence Oyster Bay – Adults Only All Inclusive
$772 a night for two, all-inclusive
Adults only, on its own peninsula at Oyster Bay by Falmouth, about 40 minutes from the airport. 1,650 reviews rate it 9.2. The Luminous Lagoon and the Martha Brae are each about ten minutes by road, so the night trip needs no long transfer from here.

West of Montego Bay, on the beach
Round Hill Hotel And Villas
$1,189 a night, room only
The dearest room in this search, on a private cove west of town, rated 9.6 by 301 guests. It came through Melissa with little damage and reopened last December, the first big resort back. Room only, and the restaurants price to match the rooms.
What to do
The best-rated tour in Montego Bay is the Rastafari cultural ATV trip, rated 9.8 at $165. The Great River raft is the cheap river trip at $50, and the Martha Brae is the famous one. The waterfall day near Ocho Rios covers Dunn’s River and two more falls.

Rastafari Cultural ATV Community Experience
Three hours and $165, rated 9.8 from 920 reviews, the best score of anything sold in Montego Bay. The quad bike gets you up into the hills, and the time is spent in a working Rastafari community. Dry-season mornings are the dusty ones.

Blue Hole, Secret Falls & Dunn's River Falls Full Day
$126 for Blue Hole, Secret Falls and Dunn’s River in one six-hour day, rated 9.6 from 226 reviews. All three are near Ocho Rios, so a good part of the day is the drive east. Wear shoes you can climb wet rock in.

Great River Bamboo Rafting and Margaritaville
Two hours on a bamboo raft for $50, less than half the Martha Brae price, on the Great River west of town. It’s rated 9.6, though only 39 people have reviewed it. The Margaritaville stop is the part you could skip.

Bamboo River Rafting on the Martha Brae
The famous raft trip, an hour and a half poled down the Martha Brae near Falmouth by a captain who talks most of the way. $108 and 9.4 from 205 reviews. Pair it with a Falmouth day, since the river is just inland of the town.

Bamboo Rafting with Limestone Massage
The cheapest raft here at $47, 90 minutes on the water with a limestone rub on the riverbank as the extra. Rated 9.0 by 67 people. Take the Great River trip if you want the quieter river, this one if you want the massage.

Rick's Cafe & Seven Mile Beach Day Tour
$48 for six hours, with the ride to Negril, Seven Mile Beach and the cliff at Rick’s Cafe. Only nine reviews, at 9.6. Melissa came ashore in Westmoreland, so read the latest reviews on how Negril looks before you book.

Cool Runnings Cruise to Dunn's River Falls
Dunn’s River by catamaran, with lunch and an open bar on board, for $130. 726 reviews rate it 8.8. It costs about the same as the three-falls land tour and swaps two of the waterfalls for a day at sea.

Luminous Lagoon Night Tour
The bioluminescent lagoon at Falmouth, where the water lights up green-blue as you move through it. $79 for three hours, rated 8.4 by 28 people. This one leaves from Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay, so from Montego Bay you’d sort your own ride.

Horseback Ride and Swim
Two hours for $120, riding along the shore and then taking the horse into the sea bareback. It’s rated 8.6 from 42 reviews. Book a morning slot in summer, before the heat and the afternoon showers.

Club Mobay VIP Airport Lounge
$35 for a lounge seat at Sangster, with 2,954 reviews at 8.8, more than any other thing in this research. People buy it to skip the queues in high season. The terminal flooded in Melissa, so check it’s running before you pay.
What most visitors miss
Montego Bay’s free side starts at Dead End Beach under the airport approach and Harmony Beach Park on Howard Cooke Boulevard. Downtown, Sam Sharpe Square marks the 1831 rebellion. Rocklands has hummingbirds that feed from your hand, and Falmouth’s Georgian grid is 29km east.
beachKent Avenue, by the airport
Dead End Beach
A free public beach at the end of Kent Avenue, right under the approach to Sangster. Planes come in low enough to read the airline on the tail. The water stays shallow and clear a long way out and the crowd is mostly local.
Tip Free. We couldn’t confirm how it came through Melissa, so ask your hotel before you go. Sunset is the busy time. Bring water shoes for the coarse patches, and the grill across the road may let you use its toilets.
beachHoward Cooke Boulevard
Harmony Beach Park
A free public beach park on 16 acres along Howard Cooke Boulevard, about seven minutes from the airport. There’s a rubber jogging track through native planting and a stretch of sand that town families use at weekends.
Tip Free. The UDC reopened it after Melissa on shorter hours, 8am to 6pm, and the old Wednesday to Sunday beach days may have changed, so check before a Monday or Tuesday swim.
historyDowntown
Sam Sharpe Square and the Cage
The downtown square where Sam Sharpe, who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, was hanged. The Cage in the corner is a one room stone lockup where enslaved Africans and disorderly seamen were locked up. Kay Sullivan’s bronze statues show Sharpe preaching with his Bible.
Tip The square is free. The Cultural Centre on the southwest corner holds the museum and gallery, open Tuesday to Sunday. Its US$8 fee dates from 2017, so bring a little more.
transportSangster airport to downtown
Route taxi from the airport
White cars with red plates wait near the domestic terminal at Sangster and run into the downtown transport centre. It’s a shared ride on a fixed route for about a dollar, against the airport cab rate.
Tip J$100 when last reported. Carry small Jamaican notes, agree the fare first and pay at the end. Most run until 7pm. Only do it with a small bag.
wildlifeAnchovy, south of Montego Bay
Rocklands Bird Sanctuary
A hillside patio in Anchovy where you hold a feeder and hummingbirds, the doctor bird among them, land on your finger to drink. Lisa Sammons, the bird lady, started it, and the feeding patios were running again after Melissa.
Tip Daily 10am to 5pm, adults from US$30. It’s cash only on site while the internet is down, or prepay online. The trails were still closed when we checked, and the last stretch of road is rough.
day tripFalmouth, Trelawny
Falmouth's Georgian streets
Founded in 1769 and laid out on a grid, it’s one of the best kept Georgian towns in the Caribbean. The town had piped water before New York did.
Tip It’s 29km east of Montego Bay. Start on Water Square and walk the grid from there.
Common questions
The question most people ask about Montego Bay is whether it’s open after Hurricane Melissa. The airport reopened days after the storm, and by June 2026 the core visitor areas were open, though some resorts were still reopening in phases. Get your hotel’s status in writing before you pay.
Is Montego Bay open again after Hurricane Melissa?
Mostly. Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland in October 2025 as a category 5 and flooded much of Montego Bay, including the airport terminal. Sangster reopened for limited flights four days later, and a dozen major hotels here shut.
A report in June said the core visitor areas were open and some resorts were still reopening in phases. When we checked in September, JOIA Rose Hall was listed as closed until December. Get your hotel’s status in writing.
What is the cheapest month to visit Montego Bay?
October, with a median of $369 a night against $575 in March. It’s also the month Melissa hit last year. November’s room-only quartile was the lowest reading of the year, and hurricane season ends on the 30th, so late November is the safer saving.
How often do hurricanes hit Jamaica?
The season runs June to November, busiest from August to October. Melissa in October 2025 was the strongest on record to hit the island. Beryl passed along the south coast in July 2024 without landfall, and Gilbert crossed the whole island in September 1988.
Buy insurance that names hurricanes, and book refundable rates for anything from August.
How many days do you need in Montego Bay?
Five to seven. Three covers the Hip Strip, the beaches and downtown. Five adds the Rastafari ATV morning and Rocklands with a raft trip. A week leaves room for Falmouth and the Martha Brae, and a day east to the waterfalls or west to Negril.
Is Montego Bay safe to walk around?
The US lowered Jamaica to Level 2, exercise increased caution, in January 2026, and it still names Montego Bay as recovering from the storm. The Hip Strip is walkable by day. After dark, take a licensed taxi with red PPV plates rather than walking, and agree the fare first.
What is the weather like in winter?
December to April is the dry season, with highs around 29C to 30C (84F to 86F) and warm nights. It’s the busy stretch, and March is the dearest month. Sargassum is usually lightest from September to April, and Montego Bay tends to get less of it than Ocho Rios.
How do you get from Sangster airport to the Hip Strip?
Licensed taxis with red PPV plates wait outside arrivals, roughly US$15 to US$30 to the Hip Strip by different sources. Agree the price first.
The cheap way is a route taxi from near the domestic terminal into the downtown transport centre, J$100 when last reported. Only try it with a small bag.
Should you stay in Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios?
Montego Bay for the airport and the widest spread of hotels, from $93 on the Hip Strip to Round Hill. Negril is about two hours west by coach for Seven Mile Beach. Ocho Rios is further east past Falmouth, near the waterfalls, and a few hotels sold as Montego Bay are over there, so check the map before you book.
Should I pay in US dollars or Jamaican dollars?
Carry both. US dollars work in tourist areas, often at a worse rate, and rural shops won’t take them. Route taxis want small Jamaican notes. Cash machines are called ABMs, and one US dollar bought about J$160 in July 2026.
